The microtechnique industry in western Switzerland is a major player in the
economy. Taken into account companies active in the various clockmaking areas and those active in other microtechnique application areas, the industrial network is believed to be one of the most important in the world, with over 1 000 companies spread in a territory the size of a French
county, occupying over 60 000 employees, more than half of which work for higher education or a professional
degree.
The extremely rich network can focus on the various areas of application or markets that are more or less developed depending on the regions. Inside those networks, companies with various skills can offer finished products or sub-contracting services, make machines for machining or processing microtechnique parts, in compliance with technical requirements and the specifications of each market.
The nearby significant fabric of schools (1 500 microtechnique engineers trained in the past 10 years), scientific estates, private research and training and company nurseries, combined with the networks of the microtechnique industry make the region a centre of skills internationally recognised in the precision and microtechnique
industry.
